<h1 class="ql-align-center">Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project (SLHEP)</h1> <h2>Context:</h2> <ul><li>Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project (SLHEP), is an under-construction gravity dam on the Subansiri river along the border of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh.</li></ul> <h2>About:</h2> <ul><li>Subansiri River (gold river), originates in the Tibet Plateau and enters India through Miri hills in Arunachal Pradesh </li></ul> <ul><li>It is the largest tributary of the Brahmaputra River.</li></ul> <ul><li>The project is being developed by the state-run National Hydro Power Corporation (NHPC) </li></ul> <ul><li>The project is expected to be completed in 2023</li></ul> <ul><li>The project had been pending for a long while due to local agitation. The protest against the dam stems from the several dam safety and administrative issues involved.&nbsp;</li></ul> <ul><li class="ql-indent-1">The project is in conflict with the 1980 Brahmaputra Board Act as there was a transfer of the work of the Water Resources Department of Subansiri Basin from the Brahmaputra Board to the public and private sector.&nbsp;</li></ul> <ul><li class="ql-indent-1">According to the assessment of the Indian Institute of Technology at Roorkee, there is an increased seismic threat level to the dam.</li></ul>
