<h1 class="ql-align-center">Crime in India 2020</h1><h2> </h2><h2>﻿Context:</h2> <ul><li>Recently, the&nbsp;National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB)&nbsp;released a report titled 'Crime in India – 2020'.</li></ul> <h2>About:</h2> <ul><li>This report captures crimes registered under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Special and Local Laws (SLL)</li></ul> <ul><li>The crime rate is calculated for per one lakh of population</li></ul> <h2>Key Findings of Report:</h2> <ul><li>The Coronavirus pandemic and subsequent lockdown resulted in a drop in traditional crimes like theft, robbery, and assault on women and children in 2020.</li></ul> <ul><li>Murder&nbsp;registered a marginal&nbsp;increase of 1%&nbsp;even as offences falling under the category of&nbsp;“violent crimes” decreased by 0.5%.</li></ul> <ul><li>Delhi&nbsp;is the&nbsp;most unsafe city for women. More than&nbsp;10,093 cases of crimes against women&nbsp;were registered in the capital in 2020.</li></ul> <ul><li>Communal riots&nbsp;registered an&nbsp;increase of 96% in 2020&nbsp;over the previous year</li></ul> <ul><li>Caste riots&nbsp;saw an increase of close to&nbsp;50%, agrarian riots 38% and riots during ‘Andolan/morcha’ increased by 33%</li></ul> <ul><li>Cases under the ‘environment-related offences’ category&nbsp;increased by 78.1%&nbsp;in the country in 2020.</li></ul> <ul><li>The rate of cybercrime (incidents per lakh population) also&nbsp;increased from 3.3% in 2019 to 3.7%&nbsp;in 2020.</li></ul> <ul><li>The year also saw a significant&nbsp;drop in cases related to Offences against the State, with a drop of&nbsp;27% over 2019.</li></ul> <h2>National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB):</h2> <ul><li>It was set up in 1986 to function as a repository of information on crime and criminals.</li></ul> <ul><li>It was established on the recommendations of the&nbsp;Tandon Committee&nbsp;to the National Police Commission (1977-1981) and the MHA’s Taskforce (1985).</li></ul> <ul><li>The Bureau has also been entrusted to maintain the&nbsp;National Database of Sexual Offenders (NDSO)&nbsp;and share it with the States/UTs on a regular basis.</li></ul> <ul><li>NCRB has also been designated as the&nbsp;Central Nodal Agency&nbsp;to manage technical and operational functions of the&nbsp;‘Online Cyber-Crime Reporting Portal.</li></ul>
