<h1 class="ql-align-center">Black Softshell Turtle</h1> <h2>About:</h2> <ul><li>The black softshell turtle was thought to be “extinct in the wild”, until sightings along the Brahmaputra’s drainage in Assam.</li></ul> <ul><li>It was confined only to ponds of temples in northeastern India and Bangladesh.</li></ul> <ul><li class="ql-align-justify">Its scientific name is Nilssonia nigricans</li></ul> <h2>Status:</h2> <ul><li>The species is considered Critically Endangered by the International Union for conservation of nature (IUCN).</li></ul> <ul><li>Included in Appendix I of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES).</li></ul> <ul><li>It does not enjoy legal protection under the Indian Wildlife (Protection) Act of 1972</li></ul> <h2>Threat:</h2> <ul><li>Hunted for its meat and cartilage</li></ul> <ul><li>Change in flooding pattern</li></ul> <ul><li>Encroachment of wetlands</li></ul> <ul><li>Silt mining</li></ul>
